Default this grand am hates me BRAKES!

ok so this last month my car has been stopping poorly and seams to be getting a bit worse. 4 months ago i had the pads checked and i was told about 40% left i have only gone 3k miles since then. well today i almost ran a light today because my brakes couldnt slow me down from 40mph. then i pulled into a lot and the car will not hold its self under power unless the brakes are on 3/4 of the way. if im sitting still i can put them to the floor easy, but if im driving they have more pressure. also out of nowhere they worked perfect as i was going 70mph and had to hit my brakes and i about hit the steering wheel because i had gotton used to how the car had been stopping. my freind thinks the brake booster but if thats bad isnt the peddle hard. the fluid is good. couple things to know are i have no abs or trac due to a bad right front speed sensor so i dont know if that has any play in this.

thanks jake

Sounds like your master cylinder is going.

I would be inclined to check the master cylinder. The only thing that I believe the pads and such would account for would be brake pedal travel, and that is at the very end. Also, if you have drum brakes in the back, you will likely want to ensure they are properly adjusted.

Good question. LOL. For me it has always been the pedal went from spongy to "I'm pushing the pedal through the floor and still can't stop" Ya, I'm stubborn and know the e-brake is a last resort. Sometimes they go out kinda funny. One moment OK, next, really not OK. It will get progressively worse.

well it seems to be holding pressure after a stop but just much softer than they uses to be.

it use to actually hurt my foot if i held the pedal all the way down now its easy
