my car threw a code for the input shaft speed sensor. my mechanic hooked up the reader amd the sensor was reading abnormal and low.

when we opened the side cover and pulled out the sensor, it was notched. When you put your finger in the hole where the sensor was, you can feel the reluctor wheel teeth. But you can spin and wiggle it freely with your finger and i dont think thats normal!
​It must be detached from the drive sprocket, right? We didnt go any farther into the transmission than the side cover access

i know jack sh*t about transmissions and my mechanic isnt a transmission guy. But we were looking at diagrams and Ive been reading up.

The car drives fine and usually shifts ok. Is this something worth opening up the trans for and attempting a repair? or should i scrap it, cross my fingers, and replace the trans with a used one

"wiggle" sounds bad.

By "[spin freely]" do you mean like spinning one of those fidget spinners that the kids have these days or do you mean it moves fairly easily like it is connected to a spinning assembly that is happy to turn with it?

Do you have a new sensor available to test fit to see if it interferes with the teeth?

How many miles on this transmission. Is the engine supercharged?

it spins very easily. it is definitely not attached to the drive sprocket. the pins must be broken or missing

jw if its worth just going in and replacing the wheel and pins or if there is potentially something more serious going on

i do have a new speed sensor but i put the old one back in. No sense replacing it until the other issue is taken care of

the engine isnt supercharged. theres 163k miles on the trans

If that reluctor wheel just spins freely, then its not attached. Next question is, where are the 3 bolts that secure to the drive sprocket go?

I think your only option right now is to drop the trans, and make the necessary repairs as needed. Maybe even a new clutch kit while your at it.
