Default 4T60e Woes...

Ok..

I bought a 99 Grand Prix GT. When I put it in gear is makes an awful grinding noise, and doesnt move. If I put it in park, the park pawl engages and starts grinding as well.

It will roll forward in park also..

I had this happen on a Taurus once, and I want to know what the likelyhood of it being a busted axle?

The last time I heard this sound (in the taurus), was from an accidental neutral drop which stripped the splines right off the axle.

Anything else I should look at...

4T60 E is the vaccuum modulated version of the fully electronic 4T65 E, which your car does indeed have.
The only Series II that has the 4T60-E is a 1996 Bonneville..im sure theres a few others too.

The Supercharged cars weather it be a 4T60 or a 4T65 got a speical demonination called HD...4T65 E HD or 4T60 E HD
Difference is in the output shaft in the diff.

I need to make a correction.. Its a 97, Not a 99, And it does have a vacuum modulator and says 4t60e on it. (And all documentation i read said that the w-body retained the 4t60e until 9

It appears now that the differential has failed... Has anybody replaced one before? I'm fairly confident in being able to do it, but i've never messed with transmission internals before (nothing serious, i've installed a shift kit)...

I'm about to swap the diff in my car, soon as it arrives.

I hear it'* an hour or two process with the toughest part being the removal of the axle and popping the ball joint.

Bill,

You are going to fully photo-document that for us, right?
