2006 Pontiac Montana shuts off
My 2006 Pontiac Montana shuts off at times while driving. No warning. Just shuts off and will not start. Will not spin over. It says starting disabled. Just does this occasionally. Coast to a stop... wait 1 minute... and it starts back up and runs fine for another few days.
It will do it running 10 mph or 60 mph. I have removed the steering wheel and performed tap and wiggle test around column, BCM, ignition and other wiring. Could not get it to act up. I tried another key that was in better shape. Did not help.
I can unplug the key sensor and the car keeps running and the starting disabled light does not come on, or I can switch off while sensor is unplugged and if I turn the key fairly quickly, it will start up. If I wait 30 seconds it will not restart until I plug it back in. Looks to me like a faulty key sensor will not shut the car off.

First, check your owner'* manual, to find out which SECURITY system you have, PassLock or PassKey......
There has to be a code set.....most code readers/scanners, only can read "P", or Powertrain codes......you also need to check B, C, and U codes.....

It is passkey 3. Just wanted to know where the problem might be. It is either a loose connection or a part going bad... losing connection. It also has to be on some kind of timer reset for it to not restart until after setting for at least a minute. I don't have a scan tool and can't afford to take it to a shop. I was a GM Tech but got out in early 2000'*. Was hoping to get pointed in the right direction. Thanks
When the car dies, and won't restart, turn key to off....then turn key to on(not crank)....now watch the SECURITY/THEFT light in the dash.....does it go out after 3 seconds? If it goes out does it now crank over? Or does it stay on? If it does, will it crank over?
As far as I know, PassKey 3 only comes into play on startup......if there is a problem with it, after the car is started, it should stay running and not cause a stall.........

I drove it 25 miles today. After 14 miles it shut off. I coasted to a stop, switched it on. The security light stayed on 3 seconds then went out. On the display it said starting disabled. I tried but it would not start. I waited a few seconds and tried again. Exact same thing. The security light stayed on 3 seconds then went out. On the display it said starting disabled. I tried but it would not start. I waited about 30 seconds. This time when I tried it the security light stayed on 3 seconds then went out. On the display it showed odometer as it should. This time it started. I drove to my destination. On the way back I stopped at a store. I left it running when I went in. It had shut off when I came out. Same routine. No start til after a minute or so. Then started right up. It shut off once more. This time after it started the check engine light came on and seemed to be running a little funny... just a little surge, but made it home okay. It had 3 codes: P0601 - Int control module memory check sum error, P0606 - PCM Processor fault, and U0107 - Lost comm with throttle actuator ctrl mod. I will check more online about those codes. This is the first time it has set the check engine light.
I have seen a lot of actuator problems, where the throttle body has been replaced, and it was only a temporary fix, because the throttle body was not the problem.......what I have found is a harness problem....you can have an intermittent problem caused by a broken wire, INSIDE the insulation.....so at times there is a connection.....and then when the engine moves enough, it may flex the harness, creating an open circuit......when this happens you can lose motor control of the throttle plate or loss of signal from one of the two TPS sensors......
So what I would do is have someone step on the accelerator pedal, to raise the rpms to about 1000......this is a TAC system with no cable to the throttle body......then I would grab the harness, to the throttle body, flex it and pull on each individual wire to see if you can recreate the problem....

I tried the pulling on the wires while the engine was speeded up. Could not replicate the problem. I wiggled and tapped everything I could get to. I unplugged and checked connectors at ECM, throttle body and MAF. No problem found. I drove it afterwards and it died again but codes did not come back. Usually when something hides this well it'* in the ECM. I hate to buy one of those not really knowing if it'* bad. I wish I could get to a trouble tree or some schematics for the system.
