That modulator isn't going to do a failing trans much good, and may harm it. I'd leave it be and do it during the rebuild.

The rebuld will have to wait a bit since I'm going to be stick a few bucks replacing the *.C. and new tires.

It will give you firmer shifts, but not any increase in performance or speed that you'll ever notice. It will reduce wear on the clutches during the shifts. The reduced shift time might be responsible for a fraction of a second improvement on the 1/4 mile. But so small that you'd never know for sure.
