STUPID QUESTION: what exactly is a breather and whats it for

SOMETHING is different.
Try this if it still does that when you're done building it:

Hook up the scantool and put it under the hood with you
Start car
Remove breather/cap
Note fuel trims and o2mv
Place your hand over oil cap hole, forming a seal
Note fuel trims and o2mv

$0.13 says you're lean with the breather. That'* all I'll bet, not a penny more
