In the last little bit before the pics; Was it that only forged rods have that mark or they only leave it on forged rods for structural integrity after peening orr...? I lost ya on that, were you talking during manufacturing or during peening?
I found this picture next to "Crack test & Shot peen rods"

Any idea whats going on with this one? It looks like it went through a tumbler haha.

I was talking about the ridge on forged rods... although it'* much more pronounced with forged rods... looks like a support beam going up the side of the rod... which basically it'* supposed to be
as you found that last pic on a "crack test and shot peen" article/site .... I'd say that rod failed the crack test... they probably magnafluxed the rod (or something very similar) say the micro fractures or possible micro fractures and stressed the rod to see how back they were... but unfortuneatly I've never been privy to the process of crack testing... only the shot peen to me process
