from what ive heard jet chips is the way to go without doing it yourself.

correct, there are no "chips" or piggyback modules available for a 97, the only option would be to reprogram teh entire PCM module

Pcm tuning usually comes after some major upgrades. You may want to mod more first and then take full advantage of those mods with a reprogrammed pcm.

The PCM by itself won't really gain you much. It'* intended to 'wake up' other modifications.
