If you're doing a pipe and cone filter, then you need aftermarket, but a drop in K&N might not be the best.

Find me an engine that ever failed or had reduced lifetime because of 'dirt'. We've had this discussion time and again, and I happen to know for a fact that GM warranties on gasoline engines at least are fine with K&N'*.
And again, 'knowing mechanics that have seen this' doesn't really say much. Show me evidence or share PERSONAL knowledge of a MAF sensor that ever failed from this. They're out there, but RARE and ALWAYS related to over-oiling.
We have thousands of members, running hundreds of these filters, and never failed a MAF sensor due to this.

I can link you to plenty of discussions on other boards of mechanics/moderators who are mechanics. I got this link through one of those boards. I'm not saying K&N is going to destroy your engine, hell, i have one, but you have to understand the differences between them, and what it can do. It'* just a tradeoff.
Warranties are legally protected if a car is modified, unless that modification is, or caused the problem/broken part. If a MAF fails because of a short on a car with a K&N then it'* covered, if it'* destroyed from oil, then it'* not.
