gutting the cat
Regardless of whether or not you have emissions testing in your state, if your car came originally equipped with a catalytic converter, federal law states that you cannot remove it. There is no mileage clause. You must replace it.

This is true in Canada as well, and many other countries. (Bangladesh, UK, Netherlands, Thailand, etc.) The wording and laws slightly differ, but the point is, if you modify or remove your cat, you could be in big trouble. And there are alot of exhaust shops that either won't work on your car, or will turn you in.
If you get pulled over, and a Law Enforcement Officer smells or hears what may be the removal of a cat, all he/she has to do is look under your car. A high-flow unit will provide the backpressure you need, as well as keep you legal, and keep the environment cleaner.

well if i get pulled over by the cops and they find out i gutted my cat its my own fualt. but i dont see how i can't gain anything. also yall say its not that cheap to replace its real cheap to gut it
i dunno i'll give it some thought
how much sound would be affected running stock muffler and a gutter cat?

I saw a deal somewhere where a guy gutted his cat, put a tube through it and welded it back on so that it still looked like the cat was good if someone looked under there. But I have to side with the others on here about the pollution thing. Your state my not require testing, but get enough people not running cats, and your state will have to implement smog control eventually. We have to keep in mind the future here for our children.

well i hate to say it but i wouldn't be polluting that much i think knoxville tn has the 3rd worst air in the country or at least in the to 10 i read somewhere. its becuase we are in a valley and we have the great smokey moutains which have TONS of tourist coming thru.
my debate
i think if u going to have cats on new cars the older than 1979 cars should have cats put on them. cuase theres alot of cars and truck pre 79 that are running around. u can't just say the newer MORE efficent cars need to have cats and the older less efficent cars not have them u either make everybody run them or nobody run them.
and i know of nobody that runs a older car with a cat but i know alot of people with new cars and trucks that run no cats or gutted cats
what do yall think of this topic bout cats
i still think i'm going to gut it to see what it does i can ALWAYS put a new cat on it

A couple things to remember (ok, 3)......this topic has come up time and time again. They all end up the same.
1. The responsible LEGAL thing to do is run a performance Cat.
2. If you do something other than #1, I would advise you NOT to post it here, as this is a public forum.
3. Running without the Cat will cost you low-end torque, unless you're alot more heavily modded than me.

i might replace the cat and muffler on the car in the spring or something i dunno
i'm young 16 i just like stuff loud and more reponsive
as far as the polluting for the future i'll just build a 327 or 283 12:1 compression over 500 lift cam. single plane intake with a holley double pumper with very little exhuast for my truck and pollute in that thing
and the kid thing i really don't want to think bout kids now
now jegs sells a dynomax "super converter" 2.5 in and out but its only 13 inches long would this fit cuase the price is only $52.99
