Default Exhaust Mods? Stop Here!

Now that we are back to mod season...ahhh good old spring. I have been noticing a lot of members new and current have been posting a lot about exhaust work. So, how about we list everything we know and experienced here.

Lets compile a list here. From headers to tips.

Headers: What do they do? How much do they cost? Who offers them? Ease of installation?

Pipes: Diameters for both NA and SC'd Bonnevilles, mandreal bent? Stainless Steel?

Catalytic Converters: Models? Sizes? High flow?

Resonators: Glass pack replacements? Benefits?

Mufflers: Magnaflow? DynoMax? Flowmaster? Borla? Inlet/Outlet sizes, preferences? why or why not?

Tips: Brands?, sizes? costs?

If you have any media: pictures, links, vids please post em here, and give an explanation of what you are showing.

I'm hoping that we can create an archive of various exhaust information. Any contributions is appreciated

What do they do?
They allow exhaust gas to exit quicker allowing the engine to breath better. This really helps poweradded cars (turbo, supercharger, N20) and to a lesser extent N/A cars. Basically they allow an exhaust pipe for each cylinder on the engine instead of the stock manifolds which provide an exhaust pipe for each side of the engine. A side effect of the engine breathing better is better fuel economy.

How much do they cost?
Dependong on manufacture, they are pre-made for our cars (Series II and higher) and are available new from 400-700.00. They can be more as well if you get certain heat coatings on them.

Who offers them?
SLP
The Other Guys (TOGS)
*&*

Easy of installation?
Not for a beginner. If you have the right tools and experiance I would say a 6 out of 10 unless you run into problems. If you don't have the tools, pay an exhaust shop or buddy who does to do them. I ran into significant issues getting my SLPs on but others have done ok with TOGS.

Yes I have to agree here, the 87-99 Engine bay is HUGE. I'd love to install some headers. 00+ have to pull some stuff, or come from below.

Remember that the Series 1 head design/port layout isn't even spacing. Headers would have to be totally custom. Nothing off the shelf up through 95 for supercharged, up through 94 for NA.

I know... One difference though between the 92-99 and 00+ engine bays.

Other differences are the piping setup.

92-99 uses either a 2.25" or 2.5" mandrel bent stainless pipe. Mufflers availaible are a Single In/Single out SE base. a 92/93 Only N10 GM High Flow Single in, dual out(one side), and the crossflow SSE mufflers

Up till 93 the 3800 used no resonator. In 94, the addition of a resonator behind the catalytic converter.

Series 1 L27'* and L67'* have Tubular Manifolds, uneven spacing as you said. Some older versions of these have a manufacturing defect where the down pipe hooks up. The hole is only opened to about 1.5" on some, while they could be over 2".

And Rogue'* Headers look cool

Thanks to Twister 97 for this link
Doing some searching and came across this website. Hopefully this can help some out with exhausts. They do have clips of the 3.8 v6 engine. Also have Ford, Chrysler, Lexus,etc...
