It is needed unless you make a Fenderwell intake. The reason it is made is so that the air coming in is not mixed with the hot enginebay air. The Initial Air Temp. sensor picks up on the warmer engine bay temp. air and can reduce timing. The colder the air the more oxygen rich it is so better for combustion.

No.

I can think of MAYBE 2 cars here that might flow enough to demand 4". And too large is NOT a good thing in most cases. To develop laminar flow and velocity, you need to choose a size to support your flow.

In fact, most cars here can't outflow INTENSE'* 3.5" tubing, but it'* much better sized for our application.
