Default 180 deg stat, but what about the fans?

Seems to me that right when you could benefit from a protection standpoint with cooler temps, idling in traffic, regardless of which t-stat you have, your cooling fans are gonna wait to come on.. Aside from a manual switch, or skewing your coolant temp sensor, which would mess with the temp guage and tell the PCM the engine is hot when it isn't, what do you guys do to KEEP those temps at the 180 mark while sitting in city traffic?
If you get real serious, are you getting your chip burners to alter when the PCM commands the fans to come on? Just curious.. Mike

Most people just have the fan points tweaked in the PCM when they order an aftermarket computer.

Default okay, but...

...what about the hype of changing to the lower stat as a first defense against heat.. it'* what everyone seems to suggest as the first thing to do... still gonna get hot, though, right when you don't want it to. Mike

At idle yes, but most people aren't after performance at idle.

At highway speeds the cooling system if adequate will cool the system down to the thermostats closing temp and most people are after perofrmance when they are moving so its still a valid change even if you dont match the fan points right away.

Default okay, from a performance standpoint..

... so you have answered the question that I haven't even asked yet... Since I'm not a performance guy, not much to be gained for me... I'd just be interested in the cooler temps for engine endurance, but, at idle, on a hot summer day, nothing gained..
Pretty much what I thought, just was wondering if there was a cheap / easy way to fool the fans, but I could not come up with one. Mike

90'* Bonnies can ground a certain wire with a switch to turn on the high speed fans. I don't know if it applies to 00+.
