I guess I'll never understand the shift from vacuum-controlled HVAC to electronic stepper-motor types. I went through a few vacuum-controlled panels on my Cavalier, and when it broke, a simple 3-gang fish tank valve and some fish tank air hose temporarily fixed the selector problem...
Meanwhile, in my mom'* (formerly my) '99 Intrigue, I had to replace the HVAC controller under warranty... And then literally TWO DAYS after the warranty on the part expired, the head unit started malfunctioning again. And at over $400 a piece, and the rarity of the part around here, I was glad to pull one from a '98 that was going to the junkyard...
The electronic units are definite fail points; I wish GM went to direct-cable actuation like Japanese cars - incredible amounts of in-between-mode adjustment so you can blend the output how you want it.

I just hit the 60k mark, the vacuum controls are pretty strong, the issue was the electronic board that controls the ac button. was easy to replace the whole unit
When I got the car at 41k miles, I found the vacuum T out by the throttle body was split, so I purchased a new one at a local Chevy dealer and vacuum was restored, shifts smooth, no check engine lights.. been a good car
