Default 2003 Alero rack and pinion help

I saw that a kit was made for rebuilding the rack and pinion on an Olds Alero, it stated it had step by step instructions so I bought it. Unfortunately all it included was a generic diagram showing a disassembly of a unit not like mine, and badly out of focus. So, now I find I am unable to finish the job. I've got the Rack and Pinion out of the car, scrubbed down and inner tie rods off, but where to go from there? I removed a retaining ring at the top of the pinion gear hoping the pinion gear would slide out but the I see it is being blocked by a seal. There is a dust cover underneath it, do I remove that and drive the pinion gear out from beneath? Any help is greatly needed here. Help! Before my old lady beats me for wasting money. Help!

I've never heard of anyone trying to rebuild the steering rack. Replacement units are cheep enough to just replace the whole thing.
