I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero, the 2.4L 4-Cyl. 126,000 miles.

Just noticed a cricket-like chirp coming from the front passenger side. First heard it when foot on gas pedal, but not when off gas or on break or stopped.

Then about 2 hours later I noticed that it chirped when on gas pedal as well as when off gas pedal when going over 45MPH(no chirp when on break or stopped) and it got quieter as I went my speed went down, and stopped when just below 40MPH...

I drive a little bit more, through town at speeds of 25-30mph and noticed the chirp was there when on gas, and also there when off gas but got quieter & stopped about maybe 1 - 2 seconds after I took foot off gas...

Stopped at a gas station & when I got back in and started to drive home (2min drive), I could hear the cricket-like chirp regardless of weather my foot was on gas pedal or not.

When I got home I parked the car with engine still on & I got out & I could hear the noise, it'* coming from the front passenger side, like right near where the tire is.

Any suggestions??

Inspect the belt for any signs of unusual wear. It could be a bad pulley, or just the belt slipping.

Will do tomorrow, having my boyfriend & my mechanic friend look over it in the afternoon, I will suggest that to them, I will update this thread with the results from what my guys find.

Could also be the "chirper" on the brake pads on the front right wheel. There is a small metal piece attached to the brake pad that is positioned so that when the brake pad wears to a certain point, the metal piece rubs against the rotor and makes a chirping sound. It will get progressively worse as the brake pads wear more.

If that is what it is, bend it out of the way to stop it from rubbing on the rotor, and change your brake pads soon.

i was thinking the same thing but she said it does it when parked..

im thinking either belts or a weird sounding vaccum leak...

its also worth checking to see if you can manipulate it by turning the a/c on full and off. i know my car if i go awhile without using it my a/c compressor will make weird sounds. (when first on and first off after not using it) i think the bearings are going in mine. but it does sound somewhat like a cricket...

Boys going to look at it in a few hours...Any more suggestions would be nice.

The first thing I would check is the belt. Spray it with some water to see if the squeak goes away. If it does, replace the belt. Next take the belt off and start the car. If the squeak is gone, you know it is one of the pullies the belt is driving, and you can start narrowing the search down.
