Hello I am having a problem with the water temperature gauge on my car. I recently had a dead battery and when I jump started the car the temp gauge went backwards and now rests on top of the stop for the gauge when the key is on. when the key is off it rests a little above the stop but will not return back around to normal.

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

Start by checking all the ground points on the engine. Gauges are grounded at a different point from the battery to block. Some corrosion could be causing it. Otherwise the gauge my have died.
