1986 Oldsmobile 98 Motor Mounts
Im in the process of building a fun little car and noticed on my first test drive the motor mounts are blown out on this thing. Its a 1986 Oldsmobile 98 with a 3.8. My question is everywhere I look the motor mounts are being called 1st Design or 2nd Design and Hydraulic or Solid Rubber. Im not sure what ones to get or if there is even a difference and was hoping someone here would possibly know the aw sore. Thanks!
After rummaging around on RockAuto, it lists the first design as 85-86 only, and then the second design as spanning 85-91. This suggests the second design should work in the place of the first, but it'* hard to say, because the bolt layout and positioning looks different.
The second design looks like it was intended more for vibration suppression. The hydraulic setup absorbs vibrations, but also can be more susceptible to wear. Assuming the mounts are physically interchangeable, the solid second design is likely intended as a solid replacement for the hydraulic design, keeping some vibration suppression, while still being a bit more on the durable side.
The first design doesn't appear to have any vibration suppression in mind, but also appears to be simple and straight forward in the design.
If you can put hands on both at once, you can decide which route you wish to go, and determine whether or not they bolt up the same. If comfort is a secondary concern on this vehicle, I would likely just stick with the first design.
Also be sure you are giving due attention to the transmission mounts as well. Those can be just as annoying.

Wow, quite a car!
What rjolly87 said ^^^^^^^ , they look like they might cross to me also.
Thinking about it further, that car, for some reason, says "modify" to me. Perhaps you get the mounts you want and make them fit if they don't already.

Thank you so much for all the info. This engine dont have much for mounts to begin with and I wanted to make sure to get the best I can for it. I think my first step is going to be go to the parts store and like you said get 2 side by side and see what they look like. This car is going to be off road and a winter beater so its going to see tough times. I do know there is a sort of shock looking thing on the bottom hooked to the engine but im sure that went out long ago. You guys rock and thanks for the help!
