Default You gotta be kidding me!

I just helped my neighbors move. WCBF'ers know Brian and Michaela (in the other half of the duplex).

Brian is in the National Guard. We have a neat rivalry going, as I was in the USMC.

He gave me a case of MRE'* as a thanks for the help (along with alot of beer, and having been great friends for the last year).

I'm having one for dinner to re-live old times. But NO. Nothing is freeze dried like MY old MRE'*. These suckers are all ready to eat and have a magical HEAT PACKET that heats up the main course by simply adding water and sticking it in a bag with the food.

My brain hurts. The science behind the chemical reaction is too much to comprehend. I spent alot of time in the Marines adding water to crap and trying to find a way to heat it up, or in some cases, eating the freeze-dried food packets DRY to keep going. Even eating the instant coffee DRY. The taste alone would wake you up.

I'm simply amazed.

I could cook and eat these things on the run, while shooting at whatever popped it'* nasty head up. And keep warm in the process if it was in one of my pockets.

To clarify.....I've eaten my share of MRE'* when I was in the Marines, but NOTHING had ANY moisture in it.

It was ALL freeze-dried or powdered. And there was no source of heat. No method of cooking. Most of it, we simply ate dry. We had no other options.

Hey willwren, would you believe that the chemicals in that thing mostly comprise of iron filings? Costs about $.01 per packet...

Yeah during the floods in NC a few years ago my grandfather was given like a case of them. From what he and my brother claim they taste pretty good.
