I've got 2G ram, 160G hard drive, so I've ample power, but it does take FOREVER to boot up.

Vista is the way to go. with 2 gb of ram you'll be fine. if those security features (asking permission all the time) get bothersome you can shut them off. its really customizable once you get into it.
