Auto Insurence
Just thought I would share this with all of you, because it has affected my life and God forbid that any of you have to deal with it but if you do i hope this helps.
My brother was in a snowmobile accident 3 years ago, which left him in a coma for 8 months. Right now he is in a Brain Injury Rehab, in a wheelchair. It took us almost 2 years to get to the Rehab because of our insurance company; he was in and out of Nursing homes for two years not getting any care at all. Because he didn't have any insurence on his snowmobile. The only reasone, thank God, we were able to get into a Brain Injury Rehab, is because the owners made an exception for my brother.
Today my mom was talking to the owner of the Brain Injury Rehab where my brother lives, and she was talking about car insurance... apparently there was a young lady that was in a car accident, which left her with a severe head injury. But on her auto insurance policy, here health insurance was listed as primary insurer, trust me on this one, they don't do jack squat. We have been fighting with our insurance company for 3 years straight.
Now this young lady is not able to get the care she deserves because, she has to wait until the money from her health insurance runs out before she can benefit from the car insurance. Usually that is upwards of 2 million; which for a head injury can take 2 or more years of hospital bills etc... She is not able to be in a Brain Injury Rehab because the health insurance won’t pay for that... If she had had her Auto insurance as primary, they pay for MUCH more and she would be getting all the care she needs.
Just today my mom called our auto insurance company to check to see if our auto insurance policy had our auto insurance company listed as primary insurer or secondary. Turns out our auto insurance was secondary, so for $25 more a year our auto insurance is now our primary insurer.
Take it from someone who has been through the fighting and (pardon my French) bullshitting with the health insurance companies, call your auto insurance company today and make sure, for the extra $25 a year, if anything, God forbid, happens it will make care a lot easier.
I just thought I would let all of you know, because if I can help even one person not go through the helI we have been through with our insurance company then I will be happy.

I don't think you get 'more' per say but the cash may flow more easily and w/o co-pays or other hassles. Your auto insurance would cut right off at the limit which is typically 100k or 300k w/o question and getting anything more out of them is nearly impossible since they've met the contract to the letter.
I'm also sure the rules are different in different states and what I just said applies to NY.
My father in law was in a bad accident (other guys fault) and was in the hospital for a LONG time, once the 300k limit was hit they wheeled him out of the hospital and took him to the V.A. hospital (his only health insurance) for the remainder of his care. So yeah, I'm quite sure of what happens in NY. LOL
If you're interested in the rest of this story - read on, otherwise skip over
Naturally they sued and ended up settlinig out of court for $500,000. Thats alot of money they thought...wrong. The lawyer took 40% right off the top leaving $300k, the VA then took 175k for their costs. Medicaide took 25k for thier costs - leaving them with .... nothing. The lawyer 'felt bad' about that and gave them 5 thousand out of his cut. Medicaide actually took more then they were supposed to to cover future costs (or some such) and they were able to buy a wheelchair van with it since he'* brain damaged and disabled (but can walk alittle). That was 12 years ago; the van is junked and they've live on Welfare to this day.

I can't vouch for other states or health care providers. As for here in MS with the company I work for your auto medical benefits are primary and your health is secondary.
I hate to hear that this has happened. I know that here on a recreational vehicle it has to have its own policy and medical in order to be covered should something like this happen and it is subject to the limits on the policy.

When I got in my bad car wreck in 2001 I had Allstate at the time. They covered all my medical bills for up to 5 years as long as I didn't sue the other lady. Well I sued, and when I finally settled 3 years later, Allstate then stopped coverage on my medical expenses which was no big deal because by that time I wasn't going to physical therapy anymore. But my health insurance was a secondary to my Automotive Insurance.

Most health providers would expect auto coverage to be primary in the event of an auto accident because they don't want to have to pay anything they don't feel they owe.
The few things I have learned about insurance is that it is good to have the majority of the time and it is very vague and has a lot of gray areas like: if, and, or, but, however.
Our medical can be as little as 1,000 or as much as 100,000 based on what the policyholder chooses. I carry 50,000 medical. I know I have a higher probablility of getting into a car accident since I drive so much.
