I have a 1210xi all in one. I know you hate it andrew, but i still have original ink (1 year later) and it prints beautifully, and scans great.
One touch scanning, and copying, and the ability to copy without a computer is nice.

When comparing ink prices, you have to look at the volume in ml of the cartridges when comparing prices, and also at drop volume. HP has the smallest nozzles in the industry, making finer resolution and less ink per drop.
Comparing hp to Epson ink is a story too. Try a smear test. HP inks are much more water-fast/smudge proof.
