I've got to ask something, I don't know if you can really answer yet, since you're just starting to learn stick. Once I've had a stick car for a few days, I ususally learn to shift by ear, listening to the engine note. Being deaf, can you feel the engine vibration and go by that, or do you depend entirely on the tachometer?
Just a guess here, but how do you jam it out in your car? You look at the tach....nah, you can FEEL it. When PJ is in the car she insists upon cranking up the rap music You couldn't hear an air horn right next to your ear, let alone a four-banger. I don't usually look at the tach (maybe when starting on a hill), but you can feel it in the pedals. Or at least I do
You could to hear an air horn!! And no, I can't drive a stick, Logan'* tried to teach me and I haven't gotten past second gear.

You barely made it INTO second gear...if you could successfully get to the point which you can get to second consistantly you are good enough to drive on the road. Its easy from there.

I have gotten some ideas from this thread, we will have to go out for another lesson soon.

Well, I know how to drive stick, and am decent at it, just still haven't mastered the downshift quite yet. Other than that and occasionally slipping the clutch, I do pretty good.

Downshifting in a clutch (to slow the vehicle I'm assuming most of you mean) isn't necessary. It'* a nice feature, if used properly, tho.

Another thing I like about standards. You lose a gear, you can skip it. I've had more than a couple of "one payday" vehicles (you can buy it with one paycheck beater). And they were always standards, for just that reason. With a standard transmission, you can adjust your shifting to account for a lot of engine and tranny problems.

Logan is right, I shift by feel, you can usually tell when it'* time to shift, I shift when I feel that "slowing down" when you've used up all the power in that gear then I shift. Sometimes I look at the tach to make sure I don't stall, which I've done six times in a row trying to take off
