You couldn't hear an air horn right next to your ear, let alone a four-banger. I don't usually look at the tach (maybe when starting on a hill), but you can feel it in the pedals. Or at least I do

Downshifting in a clutch (to slow the vehicle I'm assuming most of you mean) isn't necessary. It'* a nice feature, if used properly, tho.
Another thing I like about standards. You lose a gear, you can skip it. I've had more than a couple of "one payday" vehicles (you can buy it with one paycheck beater). And they were always standards, for just that reason. With a standard transmission, you can adjust your shifting to account for a lot of engine and tranny problems.
