So you can use the weights on the inside, so the face is clean ?

On the torque stars I had, my mechanic told me that people putting weights on the inside can mess with things.. I forget the full details. Was he wrong? I've been wanting to put the weights on the inside of the wheel on the Impala for a clean look, but.. never got around to ever asking details about it.

I've actually done it religiously for my past couple of cars. I've never noticed any difference. As long as I keep check of my tire pressure, the tires wear fine and I don't feel any vibration that shouldn't be there. The new Beetles are the same as Nissan. They don't have an outer lip and have to be balanced with pound on weights or sticky weights on the inside. As long as the balancer zeroes out, the tire should be balanced.

the biggest downfall of the sticky weights, is that if the tech doesnt clean the rim well enough they wont stick very well and can easily come off the wheel

When ever I would balance tires, you would have to set up the machine before hand in order to identify whether the weights went on both inside and outside, or just inside. I did a test once and ran the machine both ways thinking that when it went on the inside it would just take both amounts and place them on the inside, I was wrong. Placing them on the inside never caused a problem unless the rim width was greater then 8" or the weight greater then 3.5 ounces. If the customer still wanted the weight on the inside which that much weight requested I would sometimes rotate the tire on the rim hoping that the high spot changed..

Good info. I have one rim with the weight on the inside for some reason, and when I had a tire replaced last year the guy at Discount Tire said it noticably detract from the smoothness of the ride if I had the rest done.
