Yes, they did, and they did improve somewhat on the design, but still have a few years to go to work out their bugs. I included Compaq in that list because he said he'* looking for a used laptop.

Dell Latitude D-Series laptops are amazing. I use Dell laptops at work, and the business class computers are top notch. They hardly break, and they look amazing too.

Look on Dell'* site under the Dell outlet to save money.

Intel® Pentium® 4 Extreme Edition Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology – (3.2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2.5MB L3 Cache)
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology - (2.8GHz - 3.4GHz, 800MHz FSB, 512KB Cache)
Memory
1GB PC-3200 DDR SDRAM at 400MHz.
upgradeable up to 2 GB of PC3200 with 2 SO-DIMM slots.

This thing comes loaded graphics wise but is upgradable because it has an AGP slot which is really awesome. If your not into gaming or video editing and stuff their normal laptops/notebooks are really nice fast and cheap. But this is the one I would get.. Its a PC replacer.
