Probably an MPS MP3, whatever it was called, the turbo'd 170hp car...
Not a GTI at all... A lot of S2k owners have put those kind of intakes on as well, doesn't look like one to me with the sheetmetal underneath.

You're thinking of the Mazdaspeed Protege, which it very well may be, since the turbo is located near the front of the engine...

Jerry, look at the join between the bumper cover and fender at the rear of the light. The car in the ad has a join that is much further up the side of the light. The Civic also has a wide curve to that line, where the Protege matches the sharper angle shown in the ad.
It'* a Protege, exactly the same as the one Peter Posted. Might be a MazdaSpeed, but it'* definitely a Protege.
