Default Wait a minute...

Why is it that the EPA is so pissy about refridgerent in cars, and unauthorized sources charging A/C systems in cars, etc, even though they are using R134a?

I find it funny! Has anybody actually looked to see what the actual chemical name is of the refridgerant? It is tetrafluorethane. That is great and all, but has anyone looked at the primary ingredient in most canned air dusters? Tetrafluorethane. So, when my car is overcharged a little bit with R134a, and I let a little out in to the atmosphere, and somebody cries, I am going to point them in the direction of Joe Schmoe cleaning his keyboard with a canned duster. I will let them then decide who is killing baby seals.

/Random late night pointless rant.

Carry on!

It'* the chlorine molecule in the old refrigerant that "eats" ozone....The new stuff can be had anywhere. By the case at autozone. It got fluorine instead of chlorine,... maybe the baby harp seals will have less cavities. ;-P

I think he'* referring to how the R134A is being replaced with a new, more nontoxic/harmful to atmosphere refridgerant yet again and 134A prices have gone up significantly.

My mom refuses to retrofit her 86 Monte SS for R134. Believes the R12 cools better.

Well, it does, in systems that were designed for it.

Haha, no kidding? I never would have thought of that!

That'* the point of a retrofit though, to make something designed for one thing work with another. New compressor, new lines, etc. Makes it designed for R134 when you're all said and done.
