I made the switch...sort of. I tried installing Beryl and my computer crashed. HARD. So hard that I tried to using the Windows XP disk to rescue the computer. Bad idea. It formated the entire drive, so I lost everything :(

But I am back, using dual-boot. I think Ubuntu is great for the most part, though ripping music to MP3 is a pain because the core doesn't support it. And though I would love to use Beryl, I don't trust it enough.

Ubuntu is easier to install and get my hardware running.

Now, if I could get my MS *&T 2006 GPS antennae/device to work for sure, I'd be all set.

Bah! I try this all of the time, but I just can't make the transition completely to Linux.

1) WINE won't run all of my windows programs that I want to take with me
2) I was able to set up an emulator (QEMU) and even have most of the connectivity (i.e. masqueraded network to support sharing my wireless card with a guest OS), but no sense in emulating a complete PC just to run another OS

I will say, however, for day-to-day Linux use, Ubuntu is the closest thing yet!

Really? I have a stock Intel integrated 910 and it works pretty good.
Well, I installed it. Have been playing with it on and off all day. And can't get it to do so much as a damned thing. How the heck do you apply a theme? I also want the exploding windows effect, but again, can't figure out how to apply it.

And I can't find any useful documentation

Here is what I did to install Beryl and it worked perfectly:

Code:
sudo echo "Beryl & Intel installation script for ubuntu Ubuntu Feisty"
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup.beryl-script
sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup.beryl-script
echo "deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org feisty main
deb-src http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org feisty main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
wget http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/root@lupine.me.uk.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y install beryl beryl-manager emerald-themes
sudo cp /usr/share/applications/beryl-manager.desktop /etc/xdg/autostart/beryl-manager.desktop
cp /usr/share/applications/beryl-manager.desktop ~/Desktop/beryl-manager.desktop
echo -e "Logout now and then press \e[0;31mCTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE\e[0m to restart xorg"
echo "Installation completed !"

good site for all your ubuntu needs
www.ubuntuforums.org/

to apply a theme you need the emerald manager you can get it under 'add/remove'

and for the exploding windows effect its under the settings for beryl manager the specific one I don't recall off the top of my head but I'll check and post once I get home

I have Beryl and Emerald installed. They run great. I found the effects. I just don't know how to implement anything

And, I'm a member at Ubuntuforums

I'd say go for ubuntu its the most user friendly of linux distros

here'* what'* needed for an install. there'* a built in partitioner with the cd to do all the partitioning for you.
System requirements

The current Ubuntu release, 7.04, requires 256 megabytes of RAM , and, when installed to the hard disk , requires at least three gigabytes of hard-disk space if installed as the usual Desktop installation. The Server installation requires 64MB of RAM and 500MB of hard disk space.

Mos, in the beryl manager you just have to check box the options you want and they apply themselves there'* no 'apply' button
is that what you ment :?:
