well, the main concern is with a cup of water i use to start stuff. there is this vine that i have, that you can clip, stick the clipping in water until roots shoot out of it, then plant it.

Forgot to ask -are you sure you don't have your state abbreviation backwards? :? Because the last time I checked Minnesota'* abbreviation was MN -not NM.

Close the door, and get a screen?
Maybe a drop or two of vegetable or other cooking oil in the water? That will keep a thin layer of oil on top of the water to keep the bugs out. Hopefully, it won't coat the roots too much when you pull the plant out..
