Yep, I know what you mean about it dying in different channels, the UT4 like in yours don, was in my cutlass ciera. I had no front channels and the backs were nothing special. Hah, I will stick with the UM6 in my bonne, its excellent. AND the UM6 in my Electra PA Limited was perfect too. They did something a LITTLE screwy with those equalizer ones.

I wonder will my old tape player get $175? I doubt it.

Greetings all,

Back from a (too) long absence. I promise I won't be such a stranger if I can avoid it...

Anyhoo... I've just picked up this very item at a garage sale for the handsome sum of one (1) dollar, and of course the elderly owner had no idea what the unlock code might be as he hadn't even had the car itself (a '91 GP) for over 10 years now. I've plugged it into the '93 SSEi as a temporary substitute while my nicely rare EQ CD player comes out for some repairs. (The CD has pooped out.)

So anyway, installation was no problem at all, after swapping over a few mounting brackets, but of course I'm now faced with unlocking the darn thing. I've pulled up various instructions on the web, but none seem to be quite the right set for this model. For example, in some version of the instructions, I'm supposed to press two of the numbered preset buttons at the same time -- different pairings depending on whose instructions you're reading -- but as you can see in the photo, this model doesn't _have_ any numbers on the buttons, so right away I'm stuck trying to figure out which is which.

I know from searching the forum here that there was much gnashing of teeth back around 2003 or so over whether it was safe to distribute those instructions, but now that another four years have gone by, I'm wondering whether it would be safe to ask again. If you know and want to send instructions to me in PM, that would be great. The photo shows the exact model I have now; any help would be appreciated...

Ah... okay... well, my steering wheel controls haven't been working reliably for a while now, plus this originally came out of a '91 GP rather than a '93 SSEi, so I'm not expecting a whole lot of recognition there, at least nothing good. The unit has remained firmly on "Loc" since yesterday, although I haven't actually _tried_ twiddling any steering-wheel controls, if that'* what I should be doing there.

But Depending on which control card it has, It can be permanently bypassed...
Okay... I had a feeling I might need to be pulling the thing out again sooner than expected, so I didn't snap the lower faceplate back on the dash yet. I assume I should be rummaging around in the TechInfo right about now for info on bypassing...? If not, send me a PM and get me back on track, please. Thanks...

I'll talk to my brother tomorrow. He may be able to get a code. I know he has a 800 # he calls when he gets a radio that'* locked and all he does is give a # off the radio case and they give him an unlock code.

Well, getting a number off the radio case is something I hadn't heard of before. Sounds interesting... it has all the original stickers still intact, including a manufacturing date sticker of January, 1991, so there'* no doubt about exactly which year this one is.

Went back out to the SSEi just now and verified a couple of things:

-- there is no Mute button on the steering wheel controls, although I tried pressing the ones that _are_ there, just in case anything woke up the stereo. Nope, it stayed on "Loc" the whole time

-- tried another strategy found in an old thread here: removing and replacing the Radio fuse multiple times until, I don't know, some sort of reset was supposed to occur. It didn't. (Both fuses 11 and 24 under the dash are labeled as radio-related; I tried this routine with both separately.)

-- also left the radio on for a full 90 minutes, in case it had gone into a timeout due to too many bad attempts, something like the 4-minute penalty for having a bad PASS key. No joy with further attempts at the press-two-preset-buttons-and-hold-them routine, although I'm starting to get the idea that that strategy isn't intended for a '91 unit anyway

So I'm pretty much still at Square 1 here, which is a shame because this looks like a really nice unit otherwise...
