Stop sign ticket.

I don't condone what you did and agree with everyuone else. Best way to get out of it is to stop completely. Everytime.
Now, since you have it, if you feel like the story you told the cop is the truth, you can go to court, plead not guilty, and tell the prosecuter your story if he asks why you plead not guilty. Don't try and make up another story, cause it'* not what you told the cop. The prosecutor/judge may decide to lessen the fine, which would be great for you. The worst case? You still get the full fine.
Again. THe best way to avoid a ticket is to not break the law in the first place.

Why plead not guilty? You broke the law. You know you broke the law and so does the officer. Don't lie about it.
Be honest. Plead guilty, but have an explination. Everyone makes mistakes. Don't cover up a mistake with a blatent lie, IMO.

STOP, and stop COMPLETELY.
I realize what you're saying about those benign stop signs you see on un populated ways such as those small dealer access roads...but I guess if it'll get yah a ticket, chances are, don't do it.
I guess if you'd like, plead not guilty with the basis of the sign not being placed well enough?

plea guilty and pay the ticket and learn a lesson
what if someone'* child was running into the street after a ball when you just so happen to run that stop sign... think about that.

I backed out of my driveway a few weeks back and a police car was behind me. After driving a few blocks down the cop pulled me over. He claimed I didnt come to a complete stop for 3 stop signs. He was like "didnt you see me right behind you" and laughed. Anyway he let me go with a warning. I guess this do not help your situation but I thought I would share.

I have a perfect driving record, this would be my first ticket to show up on insurance, which is why I am worried. I don't mind the fine, just the insurance increase. I already know the fine is $200.....The reason I asked was because as Technical Ted stated, the fines are split, which is why I was asking for help because the towns want a reason to reduce, I just needed a good reason.
Sorry if I offended any of you, I do stop at stop signs every other time. My accident was due to faulty tires. My car passes inspection with them last month and after the accident I was informed that my tires should not have passed....and they caused me to be unable to stop. Those two things are the only flaws I've had that could show up on insurance.
My father was hit by a car by a young girl who wasn't paying attention and she hit him on his bike....that taught me a huge lesson about driving safe....sorry I messed up on a sign, don't judge me by that. I'm just broke, literally....45 grand in student loans and lots of credit card debt....I can't afford an insurance increase!

I understand your dilemma, as finances seem to be a bit harsh everywhere..
I don't know about your state, but in Texas you have the option to plead Guilty, Not Guilty, or No Contest.
Basically pleading No Contest means you're not pleading Guilty, but you're willing to just pay the fine and get it over with.
Honestly, you may want to call your nearest ticket lawyer. Depending on the ticket, they will usually charge you a fairly minimal fee and then take it from there. They usually handle it a variety of ways, ultimately getting it dismissed somehow. Just a thought.
I am glad you realize your mistake though. Just remember, you NEVER know whose watching or what circumstances may occur that you are unaware of. Play it safe.
