Hindsight is easy, foresight is not. The simple facts are that you can never predict when you will have an accident, or what the cause will be. What I can guarantee is that if you are not driving at excessive speeds, you are less likely to cause yourself or someone else to die. The limits are in place for a reason, and in some places, they are excessive in my opinion. Consider this also. The faster you drive, the less time you have to react. Just because the law enforcement tells you it'* okay to go above the posted speed limit doesn't mean it is.

Lets just get this thread back on topic before I say something I need not say. Tensions are high and emotions are raw due to the present circumstances over Chad.

my friend who is a cop told me that he will go after anyone that is 6+ over and that out of staters have a better chance of just a warning depending on the speed but he said it varies person to person and if he see a detector he is more apt to give a ticket than warning

I personally never wanted to spend money on a radar detector. I never saw the point since often those with them still drive extremely fast and could get caught just as easily as anyone. Even when I used to speed a lot, I just kept an eye out for cops, and I never got caught. But that was just luck. I used to speed all the time, and for no good reason. But in reality, there is never really a good reason, especially when you are on the side of the road with a cop walking up to your car. On two occasions years ago I was going 105+ in a 45 on a sunny summer afternoon in a busy section of town. As much of a rush that was at the time (heart beating fast, driver'* leg shaking) I was lucky I didn't get pulled over. I was even more lucky I didn't kill myself or someone else.

Over the past 8 months I've found myself changing my whole take on speeding. And I never thought I would be able to as quickly as I have. I drive 95% highway, 450 miles a week, and it'* all basically at the speed limit. I just don't see the "thrill" of driving 100+ as I did 2-3 years ago. Not that I haven't been guilty of speeding in the past 8 months, but it'* very rare that I am. But I have a lot of motivating factors that keep me driving safely, maybe more than a lot of people. I want to save gas and money, I don't have collision coverage, I don't want to total another car, I don't want to kill my transmission or engine, I don't want to get killed... I have 'trained' myself that there'* no point in speeding and taking risks like I used to. The longer I continue to take it easy and drive the limit, the easier it is to maintain the habit. On the other hand, the more you speed, the harder it is to stop speeding. It'* just ironic how I have a supercharged Bonne and drive it so much easier than I did my 4 banger Sebring.

On a totally different note...why did I always used to hear people saying the clear license plate covers mess with radar?? I find that hard to believe.

bonnie94ssei- I don't ever drive that fast. I do 95% highway driving also and it is mostly open road so if the speed limit is 65 mph I will do no more than 72 mph. I'm not driving recklessly or like a lunatic as it was made to sound earlier.

I use my detector as just a reminder because sometimes I'm not paying attention to my speed (in town where the limit is like 20 mph or so) and I might be going over so when the radar has hit me I look at the spedometer and luckily I'm right where it needs to be.

I used to be reckless actually. That'* one of the reasons I have calmed down and matured behind the wheel. I never figured you were reckless. And using your detector as you do is how they should be used.

But seriously, I don't see a need for them (they're useless since they beep, squawk, cough) I do speed a lot but not in a matter that'* real reckless and I've been lucky not to get pulled over, I believe it'* because I don't look like i'm speeding, I signal my lane changes, I don't make any sudden changes or anything, I really believe cops look for htat because that'* probably a good clue that you're speeding. I've driven 82 on cruise control down I-71. Did I get lucky? I don't know.

It'* just a game of luck, IMO
