Default Pretty northern lights... WAM!!!

So, I was with my mother in her Ford Explorer on the highway last night. I was mesmerized by the vibrant green aurora borealis to my right. Mom was driving. I'm totally spaced out. Then.... WHAM!!! I look forward just in time to see a flash immediatly in front of the headlights, then darkness. It totally freaked me out. At 70 mph, we hit a HUGE buck. Mom pulled off quick as she could. It took out the passenger headlight and fender, grill, the bumper and all that was attached to it. Front license plate was no where to be found. The bumper was pushed back into the passenger front tire.

The dear was sausage.

Despite living in deer heaven, this is the first either of my parents have hit.

Luckily we hit just the front half of the deer, not the whole thing, so the air bags didn't go off. It wasn't completly in the lane. We almost took my car. The deer would have come up the hood and probably through the windshield into our laps.

How do the insurance companies handle deer claims. Please don't tell me they consider it a accedent.

I'm not totally sure, but when my parents hit a deer their insurance went up by quite a bit even though it was their first claim. As far as I know it'* classified under "an act of god."
