A guy at my work has one, the heads warped and he had to have new ones put on, then a week later the turbo blew out. My uncle is a fleet tech for the school board and he'* told me the 6.0L is the biggest POS Ford/International have ever made. (He loves the Duramax and Cummins, though)
My uncle has owned 2 Dodge cummins deisels. My sister'* bf has one as well. Exellent powertrain, but the auto trannies and rear end'* are garbage. If you look closely, I rate the cummins above a Power Stroke.
Duramax, that is one INTERESTING engine. I tend to hear quite a few horror stories from a friend of mine that works at a Chevy dealership. More along the lines with electrical malfunctions and smaller parts breaking. No real complants of trannys or rear ends though, which I find rather suprising.
Pre-2003 Power Strocks tend to have the most issues. Between seizing of the engine, to turbo'* blowing up, once again I have another friend that is a tech at a Ford dealership
. The current Power Stroke motor tends to hold up MUCH better. Along with the bulletproof trannies and rear ends, they have quite a winner in my eyes.As for the tranmissions and the rears on the Duramax trucks, you really can't kill an allison transmissions, but if you somehow manage to they are VERY expensive. I'm not sure about the rears, though.
Last i heard, Allison rebuild kits are NOT available, and can only be done by the factory. Then again, they don't ever need it either, and may even be fixed for free sometimes as well..
Here'* my top production/street car engines in no paticular order. Well, almost..
