since when is hotter air denser?

that'* one of the reasons you CAN get better economy, due to the less dense air you experience less aerodynamic drag.

could look at it the obama way... gas is only 3.45 9/10/gal it could be 5.45 9/10/gal... 3 is definately a smaller number than 5 that is true.
