they look the same, except they are instantly full brightness and instantly off, there is no warm up delay.

The strobe light bar of the cop that pulled me over that night was really cool to watch...had spots in my eyes for a few minutes afterwards but it was awsome none the less

Right, my patrol car has 4 way strobes then concealed LED'* in the windshield. Both turn on instantly at full brightness. The surrounding Police Departments have strobe lightbars, and one has a LED lightbar. The LED is a lot better IMO for a lightbar.

I am not sure in New York, usually Red is reserved for Fire Chiefs, Blue is reserved for volunteer firemen, Amber is security, Red and Blue is Police, Orange is Road Crews, and Green or Purple is like Emergency Operations. Honestly, as long as you dont turn them on while driving I would imagine you would be fine as long as the lenses are not visible. Of course, I think usually just about all aftermarket lights say for Offroad use only.

I think technically (at least around here) if you are not authorized for emergency lights then it must not be visible and can not be connected to a power source. I would say that you should be safe with amber/white combo, and red, well just dont abuse them and hopefully you dont have any cops that are jerks.

I am pretty sure this is still illegal in NY to use them. I think the only time you are allowed to use them is if your car is parked and off public roadways. That is, unless you have the proper documentation to be able to use something like that.

My brother has had LED strobes in his car for about a year now and talked with his girlfriend'* father who'* a leiutenant with the NY State Police about where he could and couldn't use them when he got them. The reasoning is that even though you are trying to be helpful by making it known there is a problem, you are also causing unnecessary attention to the situation and people are natural rubberneckers and will take their eyes off the road to see what'* going on and there is the potential that you will cause an accident that way. Then there is also the chance of get cited for "impersonating an officer".

basically they are for show.
