my dad gave me his old computer for while and i want to be able to connect his win 98 to my win xp i just want to send files and be able to play games with each other. i did search but it didnt find anything. i did it before now i cant remember how.
Make sure XP is set up in a WorkGroup and not a Domain (Domain is default). Make sure both are set to same workgroup. XP should then be able to see the 98 machine. To grab files from the XP machine you will need to enable sharing on a drive or folder...

Do not share a whole drive (the root), only folders. Go to Windows Explorer and right click on the desired folder, select the Sharing option and fill in the shared resourse name and the privileges on the folder. I forget the 2 password options but the default is the right one.
You're mostly there by the sounds of it.
Cheers,
