Do you have a network router or hub?

I find if setting it up is too hard, just using AIM works pretty damn good!

Make sure XP is set up in a WorkGroup and not a Domain (Domain is default). Make sure both are set to same workgroup. XP should then be able to see the 98 machine. To grab files from the XP machine you will need to enable sharing on a drive or folder...

On the 98 box you need to go to the Network settings where it shows TCP/IP and other protocols. You need to enable File and Printer Sharing.

Assuming you setup the 'workgroup' properly, you must decide which folders you will share.

Do not share a whole drive (the root), only folders. Go to Windows Explorer and right click on the desired folder, select the Sharing option and fill in the shared resourse name and the privileges on the folder. I forget the 2 password options but the default is the right one.

You're mostly there by the sounds of it.

Cheers,
