Scenario 1 - she likes you ...so when you start on this story, she gets upset because you like someone else. Then when you reveal it is her, she may feel like an idiot because she didn't see it coming.
Scenario 2 - she doesn't like you....so when you reveal to her the truth, she may feel trapped into saying "yes" when she really wants to say "no" because you've gone to great lengths.
People react totally different from what you think they will sometimes. Elaborate schemes like this can be misjudged and backfire.
I say keep it simple and casual. Don't put her on the spot like the above would. Go for the bike ride...during which I'm sure something funny will be said or done when you're both laughing. Just take that moment to say, "hey, you know what? I have a great time around you...wanna go out Friday?"
Just lay it on the line. no need to get nervous about it. No need to practice a speech. Just be YOU...unless that means you scratch your balls in public or something...just be the same friend you've been with a question about dinner. No biggy...no pressure...see where it goes.

I did a similar thing this past summer... I've known the girl from a few years, and now she'* been my girlfriend for just over 7 months. I just told her that i really like our friendship a lot but that i had feelings for her and i wanted to be more then just friends. She needed a few weeks to think it all over because she didn't want to mess up a friendship if it wouldn't work out. but, in the end, everything was just fine.
As long as you're smooth about it and don't push you will be better off in the end. either you'll have a girlfriend or a stronger friendship.
