Default Narcotic pain relivers

I was taking 20 Mg of oxycontin 3x day but the doctor just put me on oxycodine 30 mg 3x day and something called fentanyl patch every 3 days. Anyone here used any of these pain relivers?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Are you sure it'* not oxycodone? Fentanyl is a very potent narcotic analgesic. We can use the IV form, along with a benzodiazepine to put a person under enough to insert a breathing tube. These patches are generally reserved for very severe, chronic pain control. Each patch, due to the sustained release of the narcotic will work for about three days. Some a little more, some a little less. This is dependant on the patient. As I'm sure you're already aware, these need to be used carefully. You can build up a tolerance which requires increased dosing over time. I've been to many patients in an unconscious state from incorrect use. With large enough dosing, any of these agents will cause respiratory depression, potential unconsciousness and hypoxic episodes. Be sure to clean your skin well after removing the old patch. Rotate new sites with each application. ALWAYS follow the usage guidelines from your physician. If they don't seem to be working, don't just add another patch, see your physician for a consultation.

Thanks and you are right its oxycodone. I have been on 20 mg of oxycontine for about 2 years and I still dont have a dependance for it. I dont think i have the addiction gene lol since I never drank or smoked. I am on the 50 mg patch and the doctor say to come back in one week and see how I am doing. I am 5,11 and 290 pounds obese so I assume the biger I am the stronger the med I need. Anyway thanks for the info and I will see how things go with this first patch.

I changed doctors from NY to DE and that doctor has a strict policy that no doctor in his office is to prescribe oxycontin no matter what.

I suspect you mean a 50 mcg (microgram) patch but regardless, this sounds like an appropriate start for your weight. You are right, medications are generally given based upon weight (although there many with a "standard" dose). What this means for you is that you will receive 50mcg/hour. I'm not surprised at your physician requesting others not write scripts for additional meds. In Alberta (and I suspect most other places), these are required to be written on a "Triplicate Prescription". This means the pharmacy gets a copy, the physician keeps a copy and a third must be sent into the government. These are tracked by the government due to the type of medication it is. Usually these need to be filled within a specified number of days (about 5, depending on legislation) and can only be filled at the pharmacy the script was originally submitted to (no transfers allowed). These laws will of course vary by jurisdiction.

Good luck with everything. Hopefully your doctor can get your pain under control This is always a bit of a balancing act.

Thank you for the reply and you are obviously very knowledgable. I will see how it goes and hopefully I will see improvement soon.
