Everyone always talks about his playing Moses, or "Planet of the Apes", but I always thought his best role, albeit a small one, was as the King of the Players in "Hamlet". The guy had PRESENCE, the ability to wrap a scene around yourself and DEFINE a role.

Very much the same way Sean Connery does. They have a way of absorbing the role at first, then creating a pure reality around it.

Well at least he didn't have an attitude about his money, and gave back to the world that treated him well for his skills as an actor and activist:

Heston remained active in charity work (as with The Will Rogers Institute) and politics and earned a reputation as a staunch Republican and a supporter and eventual president of the National Rifle Association.
At a Variety Club Charity fund raising event held in Newcastle, England during the late 80s Hollywood actor Charlton Heston was presented with a Bob Olley sculpture (Geordie ) as a momento of his visit to the North East of England and his support for the charity.

I'd say he earned his income.
