Default This is a MAJOR mess?

My friend has a 1991 Jetta that he will pretty much give to me.For 100$ dollars, car itself is in great shape, the body is great, nice sporty jetta.

Except it wont start, he told that it was taken to a auto school where students "fixed" it and mentioned of a electric wiring issue, he took it a VW place and i cant get their number, but he said that the problem is that all 12 volts arent getting from the battery..

How difficutt are those 85-92 style Jetta'* to work on?

for 100$ the car itself is worth it.

Appriciate any opinions or anything

Email greyhare. He'* a co-worker of mine, a member here, and a Jetta (supercharged conversion) owner.

Well for that price, I would go for it.

I would start by checking the battery cables and ground straps. The most important ground, other than the negative battery cable, is from the tranaxle to the body.

It may seem obvious but is the battery good?

I don't have any books for the generation 2 cars but I will see if I can find anything.

Feel free to ask here or by PM if you have anymore questions.

If you do buy the car the best investment you can make is a good service manual.
These are not the cheapest but by far the best.

Good cars and easy to make wicked fast.

Heh, a MK2 Jetta. Dead simple to work on, watch out for the autotrannies though, they aren't too reliable (and are only a 3-speed), the 5-speed is where it'* at.

Dad used to have an '86 GL (1.8L), bought for $100 and rebuilt the motor... that thing was a tank
