I wouldn't consider HP "Top tier" in laptop quality, they definitely don't build up to say a Lenovo spec. My dad went from HP>IBM/Lenovo a few years ago at work, and he'* been absolutely thrilled with it.
Sony can pack of lot features in notebooks. HP is sort've the "chevy" of computers IMO.
On Apple, Schools go with Apple because they get HUUGE discounts on them, Apple has the best educational program by far. i like Apples, I would get a C2D laptop from them and run both Vista and OSX. Of course their "adoption rate" will be higher than PCs, they've got 3% of the market, and that figure isn't terriby accurate either, which market, home, business, school? Stats don't affect how the computer will serve you. Try both out, get what you like. I find OSX very intuitive, smooth, stable, and on the new Intel Macs it'* hard to say no to with the ability to run Vista side by side.
Don't get XP if you've got a multi-core laptop, get 2 gig of memory as well, get the smallest you can, and then upgrade online thru crucial. No reason to stick yourself with an old OS if you're getting a new machine. Anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't run it, or has tried to run it on old hardware with bad results.
Hard drives are pretty replaceable, it'* not always super easy to get into the case to replace them. Memory is usually few screws, open the flap, pop in the new dimms, and close it up.
Radomir, you can flip that notebook because it'* a pretty old one... It'* pretty much lost all the value it will already..
For what you want to do, Internet, IM, iPod, Homework an Apple could be great for you. They sleep/suspend great, the bluetooth apple mouse works SEAMLESSLY, and are great for taking around with you on campus. I suggested one to my roomy last year at school, and his parents got him one for xmas/graduation. He couldn't be happier a year or two later.

Get a MAC so you can watch those commercials on TV and say to the person next to you "Yeah I'm the cool guy in that commercial who drinks Lattes at Starbucks wearing a Fidel Castro style hat from Old Navy using my MacBook facing the door so when customers walk in they know I'm an intelligent writer who doesn't have time to stoop down to their level of intelligence to partake in conversation. I don't have time to help other 'P. C.' users with their computer problems because I never have to deal with my computer crashing. You know why? Because it doesn't ever crash! I'm gonna go smell my own poop in the toilet now."
