Looking into getting started with a Digital SLR
Check this site out. I think it is one of the best for digital camera information.

BTW, what is your intended use for the DSLR? Do you intend to go pro? If you do get a DSLR, I would highly recommend keeping your Canon. A camera does you no good unless you have it with you, and nothing can beat a point and shoot for portability. Also, image stabilization on your Canon is invaluable, in my opinion.

I use dpreview.com for all my camera review needs.
Barry, I'm not sure who you are addressing your post to, but I have no intentions of going professional, I already have a profession that I enjoy. This is simply as a hobby. My Sony does have image stabilization so, thats not really a worry. I've kept my Sony point and shoot for day to day use, but its getting on in years.
It came down to deciding what I want...limited power $300 point and shoot that will be good, but I'll still want DSLR, or spend the money and get what I want that meets my criteria, even if it is not a Canon.

Sorry Jim, I should have clarified I was posting to SSE1990. I just think some people get caught up in hype of different cameras and end up buying something they really don't need sometimes.
I would go with either the Canon rebel XTI or the Nikon D40 or D80, all under a thousand dollars and all great cameras
I prefer the Canon, but thats because i am in love with their image processing chip.
