IT? That'* your problem. Most major companies including Hewlett Packard are REDUCING and streamlining their IT departments, which is flooding the job market with 'junior' IT folks.

IT got too fat too fast, and most companies are trimming that fat now.

Yup, boom and bust. Like any other industry, just a lot faster.

Being at either end of the age/experince spectrum in the IT industry, is not the best place to be right now. In the middle, with some sound technical background, and a good 8-10 years of business experience, you can still do fairly well.

After 15 years working with/for IBM and 15 years with Pfizer... I could go on for hours about who, what, where, and why of the "fat" and fatheads who compromised a more sane, steady growth in the industry. But that'* all bygone history.

If i were young in the industry right now, I would be looking for opportunities where the technical abilities are a secondary skillset to leverage expansion into another career path.

The numbers and business indications are just too compelling at this point

IT is tough right now. Unless you're highly educated and experienced, the work is drying up. I feel bad for the college grads just starting out. The best advice I can give is to stay with the low paying jobs. That shows tenacity and that you're willing to gain the experience for low pay.

And for what it'* worth, we all think we're over worked and underpaid.....
