Why didn't I find this thread sooner? And to put my in my two cents, you don't look or act dykish at all. I'd work on my car if...well, if I didn't have my brother and dad to do it for me (hey I earned the my nickname, what can i say? 
). But if I had to, I would get my hands dirty, roll up my sleeves and do it myself, which I'm not sure if that makes me independent or just plain impatient.
