Actually, if you add up that first section of violent crimes in your link, Foghorn, you come very close to the graph that wj posted.

Well, I didn't really post it as a retort, more just to clarify what sort of crimes would be included and what the makeup in percentage terms of the overall rate they represent.

I'm not sure if rates are compiled the same in the US and Canada, still, I would have a difficult time taking the original post at face value without knowing the data used. I think most Canadians would have a hard time accepting that the violent crime rate in Canada is twice that of the US.

For instance there were 622 homicides in Canada in 2004 out of a population of roughly 32 million, in percentage terms or per 100,000 population it'* almost insignificant.

So what type of crimes were actually included in the first chart?

Cheers,

You know the reason for that don't you.

Take Texas for instance. Crime is actually very low there. Why? Because everyone carries a gun. No one dares

In Canada where guns are a no-no, the criminals have a field day.

I don't know if the US really has a lower crime rate or not, I DO know that they don't track crimes the same as they used to and manipulate crime rates by what they do and don't include.

I remember back around 95 I had just gotten an El Dorado and someone broke the side window and stole the power window & door lock controls, the trim around the rear window (weird huh?), the stereo (am/fm cassette), the Euro-style spare tire carrier. I called the cops and because no single item was valued at over $400 they wouldn't take a report or investigate. Later that year they said crime was down some 20% in Syracuse. LOL - the baturds! I bet there were fingerprints all over my car.

That is weird.
So what you are saying is, you can rob a bank and as long as you only take bills (single items) that are worth less than $400. they won't investigate.......interesting

I think with cash its the total sum figure that the bank manager makes up that counts.

I suppose you could write "I have a peanut better sandwich in my pocket, give me all your money or I'll whip it out" on the back of a deposit form and slip it back into the pile; sit back a few and see what happens...

On the item amount, you could roll up toi your local doughnut shop* and ask a cop how expensive an item needs to be before they will investigate the theft.
LOL
Tim

* OT - on a side note, I walk past a Duncan Doughnuts on my way back to the parking lot from work almost everynight and there is always at least 3 cruisers there with cops standing around eating doughnuts and drinking coffee. Why ? You'd think they'd like to be rid of that bad image! LOL
