Well a good format using NTFS will solve a lot of problems. I like SP2 a lot, but then again I installed it on a fresh copy of XP, when nothing was on it, then installed programs after that.

http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/w...rum/30471.html

other person with the same file hangin up on boot up under xp.

Have a look at it.

it actually links over to this documet

http://msgs.securepoint.com/cgi-bin/...aq0204/60.html

EDIT:

still looking for you and found this

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...5mvu%404ax.com

Edit 2:

more for you to look at:http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/cont...ic/31874/?o=20

They seem to have figured it was a link to the SP2 install, I am thinking that even though you installed SP2 and went back that it may still have an effect on it.

System restore is a great feature, and you can access by means of a startup disk. It has never blown up in anyone'* face that I know personally, and it'* saved my bacon countless times starting 3 years ago with Windows ME, and continuing through XP.

Back when I thought XP was cool beans, I found that system restore feature.. a few weeks later, my system went down the drain, and nothing worked, but I got the system restore feature loaded, and it 'returned my data back one week'... but all it did was prevent me from booting, and screwed up my NTFS partition, so I couldn't even put the HDD in another system to recover my files. I also had a friend who had a similar problem, but he was lucky enough to be able to put the HDD in another system and recover his files. Ever since then, I stray from XP, and used 2k.. until I moved to Linux. Best decision I ever made.

Jim, I hope you are doing a "clean install" of XP Pro and not a dirty install. NTFS is the only way to go. I did a clean install of XP on one of my dells last month. I did the same thing as Twister97 did by installing SP2 from the CD immediately after the OS loaded before installing any drivers and I have not had any problems with SP2. I actually noticed an increase in performance and so far the PC is running like a (GXP).

Probably refers to formatting the disk first and reinstalling XP as opposed to installing XP over top of the existing error prone version of XP.

SP2 looks to be ok, but it doesnt work well with my ISP. In fact is was deactivating my ethernet card for some reason.

Default 2 cents on SP2.

SP2 from Micro$oft contains alot of security fixes that will reduce your system vunerabilities to script kiddies with nothing else to do except write trojans. Check the docs before you install the fixes, and make sure you OS is "legal". If you use it, pay for it or go to Open Source. Virus protection and Firewalls are a must. Any Windoze system I use has been running fine with SP2 irregardless of architecture. System slow downs are not always the fault of the OS, but are more likely when you are using MS products. Cheers.
