Default heavy throttle on cold engine...

Ok, I'll admit I made a BAD mistake today and regret it, now. I had a little family emergency that resulted in me starting my car, backing out of the garage, slamming into drive and immediately pressing the gas down more than 3/4 throttle out of the driveway (leaving atleast a 20 foot black mark on the pavement.) THe engine was only running for 20 seconds or so before it saw 3/4 throttle. In all it probably saw 3/4 throttle or WOT 10 times within 5 minutes.. By the time I got back home I smelled a bad burning smell from under the hood and put the car into reverse to put it back into the garage and the car didn't move.. It took 10 seconds before the car could move in reverse. (it would rev freely before that.) I'm afraid I screwed my transmission up, and I"m also afraid that I might of done permanent engine damage from racing it when it was cold. stupid stupid stupid.

Your tranny might have gotten temporarily overheated. When my tranny died, it would function fine until it got warmed up, then I just got nothing. The way it was explained to me: the fluid got thin enough when it was warm that my weakening torque convertor couldn't be turned by it.

this sounds familiar. I've noticed that while cruising in a parking lot, or slowing down/coasting, when you go to accelerate again and you're already between 5-12 MPH, the car will make an extremely hard "thud" like the transmission slams into a gear. Also, if you're going over 60 MPH and let off the gas and let the car decelerate on its own, at 50 MPH the RPM'* will suddenly drop to 500, then quickly jump back up to over 1,500 causing the car to quickly slow down for a second or two. Really odd actually. It doesn't make sense, I'm not hard on the car at all. (I know by what I described in this post it'll seem hard to believe.) I usually don't go over 2,500 RPM though. :(

This is the 4t-65E transmission BTW with the 3.27 gear ratio.

Wow that sucks. WHen i had my neon I got it stuck in snow drift. Acutal got tranny fluid to come out of. Yes it was that hot. Once I saw what I did turn it off and let it cool off it. Added more fuild, got home changed the fuild and it was fine after that. You might want to at least try and see if that helps

Custom you could have a number of problems...

But first thing I want you to do is call the dealership and see if there is an updated program for the trans to cure some of the issues you are having...

From what I have heard and been told in the past, the 4T65-E'* supposedly do not overheat, or burnup.... Sorry, I just don't believe that due to the design of the TCC and the way that its applied... Even the service manuals show that the 65-E much like the 60-E with go into limp home mode at 260F, or degrade performance to keep the tranny from getting fried...

Do see if there is an updated program for your 65-E tho...

Got a dead one on my 91 right now... I get little clunks, and bangs.... You should see the engine torque back...
