Things may have changed, or maybe I'm too daft to remember, but yeah, Staff Seargent (E-5) is NCO, E-4 is in the Airman ranks. And the AF is MUCH slower in making rank than the other services. Making E-5 in 2y9m is exceptional in any branch, but pretty much impossible in the AF through normal processes.
