Default Extended warranties

I have no doubt that this topic has been discussed before, but I've gotta ask what you all think of automotive extended warranties (given my current car-shopping adventures).

I've already heard responses from both ends of the spectrum, from "I'd never buy a car without one" to "Don't even think about it, they are statistically a waste of money". Right now I say BOO to statistics considering that I just happened to recently fall into the 0.01% of people whose 3800-II engine actually caught fire in accordance with GM'* recent recall. Anything can happen anytime, so I should buy a warranty on my replacement car right? Any specific things to look for, companies to avoid, good or bad experiences, etc.?

I think I've made up my mind, but I figured it can't hurt to check with the population here before I sign on the dotted line.

Its a calculated risk, and depending on what you end up getting, repairs CAN be expensive. Based on labour rates alone, I would get it. Unless you're a driveway mechanic and can tackle these issues.

I agree with Jim W. , get it unless you can make most repairs on your own. It can be a wise decision if you are mechanically challenged.

Depending on the additional cost of the warranty, get it. When we bought our 2000 Grand Prix, we got a warranty added to the car ($1800 for a 5 year/50K warranty) . Its already paid for $3K worth of repairs on the car and they've never denied a claim on it.
